"The 2006 Barolo Cannubbio is fabulous. Roses, sweet spices, dark cherries, minerals and licorice are some of the notes that emerge from this deceptively medium-bodied Barolo. Cannubi is the most famous hillside in Barolo for a number of reasons, not the least of which is a unique terrain where the two main soil types of the Langhe the sandier composition of the western part of the zone and the more compact terrain of the eastern parts are found in alternating layers. Rinaldi’s Cannubbio captures the floral qualities of Nebbiolo but with surprising muscle to back things up. There is a very slight hint of sweet spice on the finish that suggest at least part of the barrels are relatively new. Those subtle tones should dissipate over time."

"As is the custom of the Cannubio at Francesco Rinaldi, the youthful structure here is a bit more hidden behind the classic youthful sappiness of this vineyard, and out of the blocks the 2006 Cannubio is certainly the more approachable of the two Rinaldi crus in this vintage. Of course, this less-structured youth should not be construed as the ’06 Cannubio being any less age-worthy than the Brunate this year- it simply has a bit more sumptuous puppy fat fruit with which to hide its classic structure. The bouquet is deep and absolutely lovely, as the wine jumps from the glass in a blaze of red and black cherries, gentle tariness, oregano, pungent violets, a hint of raw cocoa, incipient nutty tones and a beautiful base of soil. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied, complex and beautifully balanced, with a great core of pure fruit, a superb signature of terroir, ripe, well-integrated tannins, bright acids and outstanding length and grip on the classy finish. A beautiful bottle of Cannubio in the making."

"There's a firmly elegant and traditional aspect to this ruby-hued Barolo that suggests a pairing with something like bacon-wrapped scallops: in other words, a dish that is textured, delicate and aromatically intense at the same time. The bouquet here is redolent of violets, white cherry, spice and powdered licorice."
