"A world-class Syrah, the 2022 ‘Sur Echalas Vineyard’ is without a doubt one of the finest wines I have tasted over the past year. A stunning achievement by Horsepower Vineyards Director of Winemaking, Elizabeth Bourcier, this takes the lead with black truffle shavings and oyster sauce notes on the nose alongside cured meats, coffee grounds and wet stone accents. This has excellent power considering the coolness of the vintage, but the mouth-watering acidity really holds things neatly in place. The palate is plush and beautifully textured, showing beautiful weight and verve. Seamless throughout the drinking experience, with a gracious core of black and red fruits, alongside the salty and stony nuances, this is delicious, beautifully-textured Syrah that will cellar well over the next decade. Drink 2024-2034."
International Wine Report, 100 Points
"A masterful expression of Walla Walla Valley terroir, the 2022 Sur Echalas Vineyard [Syrah] opens with an intricate bouquet of blueberries, crushed black plums, roasted herbs, charred rosemary, and smoked sea salt, interwoven with layers of smoked bacon, espresso bean, and crushed graphite. The cool vintage lends remarkable poise, with electric acidity providing impeccable balance to the wine’s depth and intensity. On the palate, it is sumptuously layered, unveiling dark plums and macerated raspberries, underscored by an umami-laden savoriness and a deeply mineral core. Tannins are polished yet structured, guiding the wine toward an effortless, harmonious finish that lingers with hints of iron, olive tapenade, and wild violets. A Syrah of breathtaking complexity and depth, this is an absolute standout that will evolve beautifully in the cellar for the next 15 years or more. Highly recommended."
James Suckling, 96 Points
"This is an extreme wine. It has so much green olive, bacon fat, wet earth, iron and blood on the nose, with hints of peach and blood oranges. It’s full-bodied and powerfully meaty on the palate, with very fine, tight-grained tannins. Intensely, outrageously tarry, and keeps going. From biodynamically grown grapes. Best after 2028."
