Spain produces some truly stellar white wines that are wonderful and often under-appreciated, but always a great value. Few have realized the potential of the Valencia region in Spain like Mustiguillo and its founder Toni Sarrion. In the late 1990's, Toni Sarrion began a one man crusade to save the indigenous variety Bobal and coax it from obscurity to the forefront of truly world-class wines. His efforts focusing on Bobal and the almost lost indegnous white varietal of Merseguera has led Mustiguillo to be named one of Wine & Spirits Top 100 Wineries and credited with releasing "wines of depth, complexity and texture" by the New York Times. Merseguera is a little known white wine grape from the southeastern coast of Spain. It's rarely used to make single varietal wines and is best used in blends. Merseguera produces fresh, light to medium-bodied, fruit-forward wines with good acidity and moderate ABV. Due to its obscurity, wines from this grape are rarely seen outside of Spain. The 2022 Bodegas Mustiguillo Mestizaje Blanco is truly one of a kind. It's a pleasantly crisp and approachable wine. It's fresh, fruity and floral with notes of apricot, tropical fruit, white peach, citrus and honey. The Viognier and Malvasia balance perfectly with the Merseguera, creating a refreshing and fruity flavor profile. The unique character is enhanced by a crisp, floral mid-palate and balanced by lively acidity. This white blend is exuberant, expressive and open - perfect for hot weather. Enjoy!
Wine Advocate, 91 Points
"The white blend 2022 Mestizaje Blanco was produced with 61% Merseguera, 16% Xarello, 15% Malvasía and 8% Viognier, mostly grafted on old Bobal vines in Finca Calvestra at 920 meters in altitude. It fermented by variety and plot with indigenous yeasts in stainless steel and then matured with the fine lees in stainless steel and concrete for six months. It’s not a shy white with 13.5% alcohol and good freshness and acidity. 2022 is a little more exuberant, more expressive and open, direct, quite immediate. They harvested a little earlier to keep the freshness.”
Winemaker Notes:
"The Viognier is immediately apparent on the nose with apricot, tropical fruit and honey while underlying notes of white peach, scented flowers and citrus hints creep in from the Merseguera. The tightwire balance between the fleshy Viognier/Malvasia and taut Merseguera continue with a fresh, fruity and floral attack and an unctuous mid palate that is kept in check by bracing acidity. Truly one of a kind, Mestizaje shows its unique personality is this pleasant, crispy, imminently friendly wine."
