Telmo Rodriguez is a superstar Spanish winemaker and a pioneer, advocating for native grape varietals and making world-class wines from undiscovered regions. He is one of leaders of the quality revolution in up and coming regions like Toro and was among the first to make significant wines in the region. Toro is one of Spain's best regions for affordable, fine red wine, but it remains under the radar. The region is known for structured, big, and rich red wines. While Rodriguez is widely celebrated for his prestigious and highly sought-after wines, Gago offers a wonderful opportunity to experience his craftsmanship at a reasonable price. His everyday wines have been equally praised and widely recognized for the tremendous value they offer. Rodriguez's wines truly reflect the unique characteristics of the land they come from and account for some of the best buys from Spain. The 2017 Telmo Rodriguez Toro Gago has all the Toro character and rusticity and is quite sophisticated at this price point. It has notes of ripe fruit, dried herbs, and creamy oak. It's rich and powerful with round tannins and a hint of spice. Enjoy!
Wine Advocate, 92 Points
"The Toro red 2017 Gago comes from a vintage affected by spring frost that wiped out some vineyards and an end of the season that was very warm and dry and pushed the pH up. The wine is riper than usual, reflecting the conditions of the year. Eighty percent of the wine matured in oak foudre, the rest in barrique, for a period of 14 months. It has the Toro character and rusticity, with a solid palate and abundant, slightly dusty tannins."
Winemaker Notes:
"Gago is our most representative wine of Toro, combining the oldest vines of the 8 families with whom we work for years, and our experience to make pure and balanced wines. The Telmo Rodriguez range in Toro is named after a Spanish breed of bull that is both elegant and powerful. The 19th century lower-case “g” typeface that appears on all the Toro wines is transformed, and modernized, by a bull horn."
