"The 1970 Rioja “Viña Vial” from Federico Paternina is probably the finest wine I have ever tasted from this old line bodega. The bouquet is simply beautiful, delivering an à point aromatic constellation of dried cherries and strawberries, nutmeg, cocoa powder, spicy Rioja soil tones, coconutty oak and a nice topnote of savory elements. On the palate the wine is deep, full-bodied and very silky, with a succulent core, great, vibrant acidity, modest remaining tannins and a very long, complex and bouncy finish. A beautiful, beautiful wine." 

About the Producer: 

"The origins of this winery date back to 1896, when Federico Paternina bought three bodegas in Ollauri, in the Rioja Alta area. He subsequently acquired a cooperative in Haro, considerably expanding his production capability. After Paternina’s death, however, the company ran into increasing financial difficulties, until the Spanish government took it over in the early 1880s, and in 1985 the company sold at auction for one peseta! By the mid-1990s the new owners, Marcos Eguizabal Ramirez and his son Carlos, had restored the winery’s reputation, taking Paternina public in 1998. With a new winery in Haro, the winery now has 250 acres of vineyards and also purchases grapes from trusted growers and coops."
