Wells Guthrie has had one of the most successful and meteoric rises in the California wine world. He produces some of California's most terroir driven and food-centric wines. Wells Guthrie got his start as a tasting coordinator for Wine Spectator before turning to the production side. In Rhone he worked under Michel Chapoutier and in Burgundy he worked with legendary producers Frederic Mugnier and Domaine Dujac. In 1999, he founded Copain garnering top scores from critics. They described his top wines as "blockbusters". Through Copain Wines, he helped create and cement Anderson Valley as a place for elegant, world class Pinot Noir. In 2016, Guthrie sold Copain and turned his attention on achieving that French vigneron style he had fallen in love with earlier. He bought vineyards in Anderson Valley and started DuPuis Wines. It's a small, family-owned winery and only a two man operation. Guthrie wanted to truly highlight the diversity and uniqueness of Anderson Valley and create more focused and precise wines in the Burgundian style he so admired. DuPuis is known for their incredible Pinot Noir, Syrah and Chardonnay. The 2020 DuPuis Estate Pinot Noir is expansive on the palate with a mineral edge. It's lovely and spicy on the finish with bright acidity. This Pinot Noir has great concentration backed by harmonious structure. It has notes of ripe dark fruits, berry, cherry cola, hints of raisins, sweet spices and pine needles. It's juicy and vivid with smooth, ripe tannins. Enjoy!
Decanter, 93 Points
"Overtly ripe dark fruits, berry and cherry cola with hints of raisins and sweet spices. The palate is juicy and vivid with ripe fruit and smooth, ripe tannins. Great concentration backed by harmonious structure. Lovely and spicy on the finish."
Winemaker Notes:
"Our small lot of estate fruit produced a wine with lifted floral and dried pine needle notes to the dark red fruit aromas. Expansive on the palate with a minerally edge to the red fruit flavors that finishes with bright acidity and talc like tannins."
Alcohol: 13.5%
