Nittardi is a family owned, boutique winery with a reputation for producing fine and elegant wines.  It was once owned by famed Renaissance artist, Michelangelo, who was said to have sent his wines from this estate to the Pope each year as a gift.  This tradition is still upheld today, with Nittardi always giving its first bottles of their finest wine to the Pope.  Nittardi also honors their ties to Michelangelo by having each wine label designed by a well-known artist.  Wine Advocate described Nittardi as, "One of my favorite estates in Castellina thanks to the enormous attention on aesthetics practiced at this modern, art-loving property."  There is not a year that goes by without Nittardi's wines receiving an important award or rating from Wine Spectator, Wine Enthusiast, Wine Advocate and James Suckling.  All their vineyards are certified organic and the wines are made with the help of Italy's most celebrated winemaker, Carlo Ferrini.  The 2018 Nittardi Ad Astra Maremma Toscana is a beauty and one of the best Super Tuscan values you'll ever see.  It's rich, luscious and complex, but still approachable.  It has notes of blackcurrant, fresh cherry, chocolate and spice.  This red is medium to full bodied with good tannins and a long, silky, powerful finish.  Enjoy!

James Suckling, 94 Points

"A beautiful Maremma red with blackberry, blackcurrant and chocolate aromas and flavors. Medium to full body with creamy, round tannins that are polished and refined. A blend of sangiovese, cabernet sauvignon and cabernet franc. Drink after 2021, but already a beauty."

Winemaker Notes:

"Opulent ruby red color. Fascinating spice and chili character with blackcurrant and fresh cherry fruit on the nose. Medium body, with good tannins and long, silky and powerful finish.

The name of Ad Astra is gleaned from the Latin phrase Per Aspera Ad Astra "a rough road leads to the stars". A phrase that is also true for great wines, as greatness requires a great deal of loving work and care in the vineyards. Ad Astra is an approachable yet simultaneously serious red wine that is also a pleasure when enjoyed young."
