Producer: Matias Riccitelli
Region: Patagonia, Argentina
Varietal: Bastardo (aka Trousseau)
Year: 2019
Vinous, 93 Points
"Made with grapes from Rio Negro and aged for eight months in French oak, this 100% Trousseau - which barely exists elsewhere in Argentina - is a mild violet in color. The intense nose offers strawberry yogurt with hints of rose and secondary wood notes. Sparkly fresh in the mouth, delivering tension and active, slightly spiky tannins. A wine with its own style and lengthy finish. One to look out for."
Wine Advocate, 91+ Points
"There is a new red from Patagonia produced with old-vine Trousseau, known locally as Bastardo, of which the second vintage is the 2019 Old Vines of Patagonia Bastardo. It comes from ungrafted vines more than 60 years old that he treats as a Pinot Noir, with a soft vinification, with 30% full clusters in small oak vats with indigenous yeasts and then matured in used French barriques for six months. It has an herbal and wild side, a little riper than a Trousseau from Jura, with notes of red cherries and tea leaves and a soft and round palate, with 13% alcohol, notable acidity, very fine but abundant tannins and with more structure than you might think it has. 4,000 bottles were filled in September 2019."
