Mount Langi Ghiraz is home to tone of Australia's most iconic cool climate wines, Langi Shiraz. The winery was established in 1969 by the Fratin brothers, an Italian immigrant family with dreams of creating a little piece of Veneto in Australia. They were pioneers with a vision for cool-climate Shiraz long before it was in vogue. Mount Langi Ghiran skyrocketed to fame in 1996 when Wine Spectator featured them on the cover with the story "Australia Hits the Big Time" and the winery gained worldwide recognition. They produce one of the greatest and most iconic examples of cool-climate Shiraz. Mount Langi Ghiran's winery in Grampians sets the benchmark for the Shiraz variety in Australia. Decanter called them "a masterclass in signature Shiraz". Grampians puts out peppery, complex Shiraz that is closer to what comes out of Rhone Valley than the rest of Australia. The 2021 Mount Langi Ghiran Cliff Edge Shiraz is a super-smart buy. It has a heady nose with layers of spices and herbs, olives, violets, fresh peppercorn and blackberries. It's chiseled, silky and slinky with a long finish. It has fine, savory, pepper-flecked tannins and is both earthy and spicy. This Shiraz has flavors of dark chocolate, espresso bean, rosemary, cinnamon, sage, blueberry, huckleberry, cassis and mulberry. It's plush with supple, persistent tannins. This is a dynamic wine with an elegant finish. It's delicious now, but will only improve with cellaring. Enjoy!
Decanter, 95 Points
"A super-smart buy, with kaleidoscopic spicy lift of black and white pepper, star anise and cinnamon to the bramble-fruited nose and palate. Saturating acidity and a raft of fine but textured, immersive tannins make for a dynamic, buoyant mouthfeel. Tapering and super-fluid, the elegant finish features spicy pimento, green peppercorn, with meaty and graphite/granite undertones. Harvest ended on 7 May."
Wine Enthusiast, 94 Points
"A heady nose opens with lucid layers of spices and herbs, olive brine, violets, fresh ground peppercorn, currants and blackberries. There's polished dark chocolate oak influence. The palate is chiseled, silky and slinky but with curves and shape, sculpted by fine, savory, pepper-flecked tannins. This is a complete and detailed wine now but has the potential to cellar several more years."
Wine Spectator, 92 Points
"Notes of chocolate-covered espresso bean, rosemary and sage mingle with huckleberry, blueberry and cassis flavors in this intense red, showing plenty of freshness and finesse. Accents of cumin and tobacco linger on the long finish, where the tannins remain firm but plush. Drink now through 2034. 6,700 cases made, 1,000 cases imported."
Winemaker Notes:
"Medium-to-deep crimson. On the nose, black fruits, black olive, pepper and vanilla. With a broody intensity, this wine shows an amalgam of black, blue and red fruits, with mulberry at the forefront. Both spicy and earthy, it displays hints of purple florals and is structured by supple, yet persistent, tannins."
