Maremma is known as Tuscany's "wild west" both in terms of winemaking and landscapes. It only became a DOC in 2011, making it one of the younger appellations in Italy. The climate allows for gorgeous grapes and incredibly interesting wines. They produce good, clean, easy-drinking wines and they do it in spades. Previously unknown, Maremma has become increasingly trendy and attracted some of the most respected names in Italian wine. Be prepared to be amazed by its white wines. While Tuscany usually puts more emphasis on its red wines, Maremma devotes a lot of attention to its white wines. Querciabella enjoys the acclaim of the world's most discriminating critis. Their Mongrana wine illustrates the qualities Querciabella seeks from Maremma: restrained power, coastal freshness and purity of fruit. The 2021 Querciabella Mongrana Bianco is medium-bodied with fresh acidity and very drinkable. It has warm and tangy aromas of fresh fruit, aromatic herbs and the sea. This white blend is waxy and smooth in feel with a crisp, mineral-driven palate. It's light and elegant in body with flavors of green apples, lemons, stone fruits, seashells, yogurt, fresh almond and florals. Enjoy!
James Suckling, 91 Points
"A saline, lightly waxy white with aromas of green apples, lemons, seashells and yoghurt. Medium-bodied with fresh acidity and a briny edge. Very drinkable. From organically grown grapes. Vegan. Drink now."
Winemaker Notes:
"Mongrana Bianco brings to the glass the fragrance of the summer air: warm and tangy aromas of fresh fruit, aromatic herbs and the briny scent of the sea. A waxy, smooth feel rounds up the light and elegant body. The blend of Vermentino and Viognier offers a pleasing combination of fragrant, floral aromatics and stone fruit flavors with a crisp, mineral-driven palate. The lingering finish of fresh almond bitterness is typical of the whites from Maremma."
