Ferraton Pere & Fils produces some of the greatest under-the-radar wines in the Rhone Valley. Vinous called it “an ongoing mystery” that Ferraton “still doesn't get the attention, at least in the United States, that it richly deserves.” Ferraton has been making wine in the Rhone for since the forties, but in 1998 Michel Ferraton wanted to move the estate to biodynamics. He sought the help of his friend, Michel Chapoutier who has has over forty perfect 100-Point scores to his name. Since then, Ferraton has been a joint venture owned by M. Chapoutier but operated independently. Ferraton has gone on to beome one of the most highly respected producers in the region. They pride themselves on the ability to create terroir-driven Rhone Valley wines. Gigondas is a treasure trove of great wines at great prices. The appellation produces good-value wines that are rich and full of character. Vinous’s declared that “Gigondas delivers some of the best bang for the buck in cellar-worthy red wines from France today.” The 2019 Ferraton Pere & Fils Gigondas Les Murailles shows beautifully with considerable elegance. It has silky tannins and a great, long finish. This Rhone blend has notes of black cherries, plum, boysenberry, cedar, garrigue, and licorice. It's full-bodied and ripe, but still structured. It's delicious now, but will keep drinking for a decade. Enjoy!
Jeb Dunnuck, 91-93 Points
"The 2019 Gigondas Les Murailles showed beautifully, with considerable elegance as well as a Provençal charm in its kirsch liqueur, blackberry, cedary garrigue, and loamy soil-like aromas and flavors. Medium to full-bodied and elegant on the palate as well, it has silky tannins and a great finish. It’s going to drink nicely right out of the gate yet also evolve for 10-12 years."
Wine Advocate, 92 Points
"Scents of crushed stone, black cherries, leather and licorice emerge on the nose of the 2019 Gigondas Les Murailles. It's full-bodied and ripe while remaining structured, with fine-grained tannins supporting a plump, fleshy palate and turning softly dusty on the long finish. It should drink well for a decade or more."
Wine Spectator, 92 Points
"This offers up perfumed plum, boysenberry and black cherry compote notes that pump along nicely, picking up licorice, garrigue and a subtle mineral thread along the way. Nicely packed on the finish. Best from 2022 through 2032. 500 cases made, 60 cases imported."
Winemaker Notes:
"Vibrant, deep garnet hue. Aroma of intensely ripe tart cherries, herbs, and black pepper. Silky tannins. An expansive yet enduring wine. Notes of ripe berries, spices, and herbs from the region."
