Weingut Prinz is a young winery that started in 1991 as a hobby. Since then, Fred Prinz has emerged as Germany's, or at least Rheingau's, premier garage winemaker. Not widely known outside of Germany, Prinz's wines are characterized by their minerality, elegance, finesse and ability to age. Due to their higher elevation, the vineyards tend toward a finer, more elegant style than typical of Rheingau wines. Wine Advocate describes the wines as "tasty, juicy Rieslings that are a great pleasure to drink." They go on to say, "This portfolio of crus, but also the quality of his wines, has now made him a big player in the region." Prinz's wines are outstanding quality at an excellent value. The 2023 Prinz Riesling Trocken is very elegant and playful on the palate. It's medium-bodied and well-balanced with wonderful tension on the palate. It's round and charmingly juicy toward the finish. This Riesling has flavors of stone fruit, lemon, lime and white peaches. It's dry with pronounced wet stone minerality. This wine is remarkable and exceptional for an entry level Riesling. It's also the perfect choice for Thanksgiving dinner. Nothing quite goes so well with turkey as a Riesling. Enjoy!
James Suckling, 92 Points
"For an entry-level dry Rheingau wine this has remarkable fruit—all the colors of the apple, plus white peaches—and wonderful tension on the barely medium-bodied palate. Long, very straight and clean finish with pronounced wet stone minerality. From biodynamically grown grapes. Drink or hold. Screw cap."
Wine Advocate,
"The 2023 Rheingau Riesling trocken combines ripe and intense fruit aromas reminiscent of stone fruits that intertwine with savory terroir as well as lime and lemon notes. Very elegant and even playful on the palate, this is a medium-bodied, well-balanced Riesling that is round and charmingly juicy toward the finish and is ready for immediate drinking pleasures. The acidity is filigreed and well integrated into the perfectly ripe, round and elegant fruit. 12% stated alcohol. Screw-cap closure. Tasted in December 2024."
Winemaker Notes:
"The grapes for this wine, called "Gutsriesling" (Estate Riesling), come from parcels—similar to those used for the wines from the "Jungfer" vineyard —that, in addition to loess and clay, have a high proportion of sandy quartzite. The quartzite absorbs the sun's warmth during the day and releases it back to the vines at night. This is also crucial for the wine's pronounced minerality, freshness, and good aging potential."
Alcohol: 12%
