Cabernet Franc thrives in Loire Valley and inspires loyalty and rave reviews. The largest and best known of Loire Valley's red appellation is Chinon. Chinon is beloved in the wine industry, but largely unknown outside the industry. The region helped solidify the idea that Cabernet Franc from Loire Valley deserved to be taken seriously. Chinon wines are about power and richness. They have depth, concentration and astonishing ageability. These underrated reds have juicy red berry flavors, great acidity, lively tannins and dark minerality. Chinon is where Loire Valley's Cab Franc reaches its greatest expression. These wines are capable of standing toe to toe with France's greatest reds. Domaine Dozon is located in the south of Chinon and was originally a traditional livestock and produce farm. Today they seek to make more pure and fresh expressions of wine. This is clean, mindful traditional Loire winemaking at its best. The 2021 Domaine Dozon Clos du Saut au Loup Chinon has an intense bouquet of dark wild berries, peony, rose and spice. The palate abounds with flavors of raspberry, cranberry and dried red cherry. It has a direct fruitiness underscored by herbal notes. This Cabernet Franc has a moderately weighted, layered and textured palate. It has firm tannins and a mouthwatering finish. Enjoy!
Wine Enthusiast, 91 Points
"Raspberry, cranberry and dried red cherry partner on the subdued nose. The palate is chalky, with moments of flintiness that hint at unfurled rosebud framed by firm tannins. This wine would pair especially well with herb- and umami-forward dishes. Drink now through 2032."
Wine Advocate, 90 Points
"The 2021 Clos du Saut au Loup is derived from vines planted on siliceous, clay soils. It offers up a floral, intense bouquet of dark wild berries, peony, rose and spices, followed by a moderately weighted, layered and textured palate with slightly dry, unripe tannins and a mouthwatering finish. Macerated for three to four weeks, it’s matured for eight months, partially in foudres and partially in concrete tanks."
Winemaker Notes:
"Vibrant purple color. Traditional notes of plum skin, raspberries and capsicum abound. Manageable tannins and herbal notes underscore a direct fruitiness."
