Called the "Nebbiolo of the South", Aglianico is a brooding and age-defying red. It's considered one of the big three Italian grapes, but is not as well known as Nebbiolo and Sangiovese. Like Nebbiolo, Aglianico produces powerful, long-lived, high acid, tannic wines with compelling aromas and seductive elegance. It also has an exotic side with dark fruit flavors and notes of cinnamon, dark chocolate and coffee. It has alluring floral aromatics when young and develops spice and herbal nuances with time in the bottle. For fans of rustic, earth-driven wines, Aglianico is a star. The grape produces top-quality reds with an undeniable ability to age, much like the Nebbiolo grape. Aglianico wines are also much cheaper than Barolo and for equivalent quality. Wine critic Jancis Robinson notes, "There are some grape varieties that, like Cary Grant and Catherine Deneuve, exude class. Aglianico is one of these." Mastroberardino is the most famous name and influential producer of Aglianico in Campania. They played a major role in revitalizing and advancing winemaking in Campania after WWII. Their dedication sparked a revival of high-quality red and white wines throughout Southern Italy. Focusing on Campania’s historic native grapes, such as Aglianico, Mastroberardino has brought near-extinct varieties back to prominence as world-class wines. The 2020 Mastroberardino Redimore Irpinia Aglianico is complex, intense, warm, enveloping and well-structured. It has a long finish and a remarkable softness. This wine is seductive with pure silk textures and a core of vibrant acidity. It has notes of dried black cherries, black plum, strawberries, raspberries, vanilla, tobacco, cocoa, coffee and white pleasure. It's fresh and stylish with light, fine tannins. It's an absolute pleasure to taste. Enjoy!
Vinous, 92 Points
"A dusting of sweet spice and cedar shavings give way to dried black cherries as the 2020 Aglianico Re di More blossoms in the glass. This is seductive, with pure silk textures carried across a core of vibrant acidity. Tart red and black fruits slowly saturate, nicely offset by a tinge of sour citrus. The 2020 finishes lightly structured and with medium length, lingering on hints of licorice and bitter wild berry. The oak integration is beautifully done here, making the Aglianico Re di More a pleasure to taste."
Wine Spectator, 90 Points
"Fresh and stylish, with abundant cured tobacco, ground anise and white pepper accenting ripe black plum and currant fruit flavors. The finish shows a hint of tarry smoke alongside light, fine tannins. Drink now through 2025. 40,000 cases made, 1,000 cases imported."
Winemaker Notes:
"Deep ruby red color. Complex and intense, with hints of red fruits, especially strawberries and raspberries, and spices such as vanilla, tobacco, cocoa and coffee. Warm, enveloping, well-structured, with a long persistence and a remarkable softness."
