"Saint-Jacques 1er Cru is endowed with the most backward and broodiest bouquet of the fine Clos Saint-Jacques and demands a lot of coaxing from the glass. Eventually, I was able to pick out light rose petal aromas, freshly tilled soil and hints of black rather than red fruit. The palate is medium-bodied with a sweet fig- and date-tinged opening. There is fine depth to this balanced Premier Cru, and toward the finish it begins to find its voice, offering brown spices and tobacco notes. This is an intriguing barrel sample that will be fascinating to watch. I am not sure that the 2017 will match the outstanding 2015 or 2016."
