"The label of the 2016 Monte de Ferro Red Blend indicates Sassoferrato as the producer, but readers should be aware that this blend, made by Matt Smith, is sold under the Grapeseed Wine Fund brand, a company in Healdsburg with a portfolio of very small producers. A blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Sangiovese, it has a medium to deep ruby-purple color and a beautifully minerally nose of graphite, iron and crushed stone with a core of crème de cassis, fresh sage, milk chocolate, hoisin and leather plus crushed black and red cherries and floral notes. The palate is medium to full-bodied with intense flavor layers, a plush frame of gently chewy tannins and good freshness, finishing layered. 132 cases produced."
