Founded in the mid-16th century, Clos du Mont-Olivet is a true insiders's Chateneuf-du-Pape and Lirac domaine.  Frequently hailed as a beacon of traditionalism, the domaine makes Rhone wines that value freshness and elegance over power.  Today the estate is run by the dynamic and talented Thierry Sabon and since he's been in charge the quality of Clos du Mont-Olivet has never been higher.  His minimalist approach to winemaking has garnered him praise across the wine world as Southern Rhone's wines rarely speak so clearly and eloquently of their terroir.  Wine critic Jeb Dunnuck wrote, "Consistently outstanding, classic Côtes du Rhônes and Châteauneuf du Papes emerge from Clos du Mont-Olivet, run by the incredibly talented and thoughtful Thierry Sabon for a number of years now."  The village of Lirac sits on the “right bank," due west from Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Savvy winemakers today are indeed looking west, rediscovering these old-vine vineyards and realizing that quality here is similar, if not equal, to those plots in the Chateauneuf.  The 2019 Clos du Mont-Olivet Lirac is a sensational wine that will give many a Chateauneuf-du-Pape a run for its money.  It's balanced and silken with a gloriously supple finish.  This Rhone red is vibrant and expressive with notes of blackberry, currants, graphite and peppery herbs.  Enjoy!

Wine Spectator, 93 Points

"Kirsch, linzer and cherry purée notes stream through in this vibrant and expressive offering, displaying a lovely, silky feel from start to finish. Light iron and shiso hints filter through at the very end, adding range and subtle persistence. Drink now through 2034. 1,000 cases made, 400 cases imported."

Winemaker Notes:

"This noble Lirac bursts from the glass with blackberry and currant fruits, graphite, charred meats, and peppery herbs. A sensational wine that is balanced and silken, with a gloriously supple finish.

The village of Lirac sits on the “right bank,” or right banks of the Rhone river, due west from Chateauneuf-du-Pape. Savvy winemakers today are indeed looking west, rediscovering these old-vine vineyards and realizing that quality here is similar, if not equal, to those plots under the shadow of the papal ruins in Chateauneuf! A bold blend of Grenache, Syrah and Cinsault, this savory red will give many a Chateauneuf a run for its money."
