Wine Region Profile: Oak Knoll District AVA

A Brief History of Oak Knoll District 

The Oak Knoll District was part of the original Rancho Napa land grant given to Salvador Vallejo in 1838; it has a rich viticultural history. Joseph W. Osborne introduced vinifera varieties for fine wine to the area in 1851. He gained early recognition for his wines, which included Zinfandel. However, by the late 19th century, viticulture was not the primary agricultural activity, with only about five percent of the land used for vineyards. The wine industry then further declined owing to phylloxera and, the death knell of Prohibition. Since the end of Prohibition, the Oak Knoll District has seen significant growth in vineyard plantings, now encompassing over 4,150 acres. 

OKD’s Terroir 

Known for its cooler climate and long growing season, it is renowned for producing elegant and understated wines. The region's flat terrain and deep loam soils, coupled with the daily fog from the Bay, make it ideal for growing white grapes, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, and old vine Zinfandel. The central part of the district, with its rich fluvial soils, produces fruity wines, while the gravelly soils in the west, near Mount Veeder, give diversity to the possible terroirs.
