Girasole, meaning sunflower in Italian, is the second label for the Barra family who have been winegrowers in Mendocino for decades. Fondly referred to as Mendocino's "godfather of grape growing", Charlie Barra was a leader of the Mendocino wine industry and the organic wine movement.  He'd been farming organically for 30 years before the term was even invented.  He purchased his first vineyard in 1955.  He worked with Karl Wente, Robert Mondavi and others on moving to a varietal-focused vineyard. He was a passionate advocate for Mendocino wine and a founding member of the California North Coast Grape Growers Association.  He got the California North Coast AVA to be the first appellation designation recognized by the Bureau of Alcohol and Firearms as a distinct, premium growing region in California.  Today, Girasole is still family owned and operated.  All their wines are made from certified organic grapes that are hand picked and estate grown.  This blend is a tribute to the legacy of Charlie Barra who passed away in 2019.  It won a Double Gold at last year's San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition.  The 2019 Girasole Vineyards Charlie's Blend is medium bodied and silky smooth.  It has alluring aromas of ripe boysenberry, light caramel and roasted pine nuts.  This red blend has flavors of mocha, clove, raspberry, toasted marshmallow, and hints of vanilla.  It has well-integrated tannins with a long, layered finish.  Enjoy!

Double Gold Winner - 2021 San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition

Wine & Spirits, 92 Points

"Charlie’s Blend combines merlot, cabernet sauvignon and petite sirah, and for now the petite leads the charge, spicy, sanguine, darkly luminous, with scents of berries and mocha taking on a red tinge with air. The flavors are dominated by spice—mocha, clove, olive and chocolate—with a cedary note that reminds you where this wine is coming from—Mendocino forest-adjacent."

Winemaker Notes:

"A delectable union of Merlot, Cabernet, Petite Sirah and Zinfandel grown on the family’s three certified organic vineyard sites. Compliments of the Petite Sirah and Merlot, this wine displays a rich, deep ruby color in the glass. It opens with alluring aromas of ripe boysenberry, light caramel and roasted pine nuts. On the palate flavors of raspberry, toasted marshmallow and hints of vanilla tempt the taste buds. The well integrated tannins on this medium bodied red wine deliver a silky smooth mouthfeel, and the finish is long and layered. For those of you that were fans of our previous Hybrid Red blend, this one is for you!"
