It is said that Andrea Cortonesi has only himself as competition in Montalcino. Started in 2006, Voliero is made by the famous winemaker of Uccelliera for his trattoria in Siena. Cortonesi had not intended to export these wines as they were intended to be used only for his restaurant. However, in 2010 famed wine critic, Antonio Galloni, visited the estate and tasted the Voliero wines. He flipped his lid for them! With such high praise, the wines immediately found an audience abroad. Voliero wines have a very limited production, he only makes about 400 cases of Rosso each year. Voliero is made from one of the most prestigious vineyards on the northern side of Montalcino. Here Cortonesi crafts an undeniably classic and refined portrait of Sangiovese. The 2019 Voliero Rosso di Montalcino is delightful with a wild strawberries, brown spice, white pepper and smoke. It's medium-bodied, bright and juicy with silky textures. There's sour cherries, lemon zest, peppercorns and dried herbs on the nose. This Rosso is elegant and refined and has an inner sweetness that lingers with violet tones and an underlying note of tart citrus. It has quite a lot going on now and will only become more expressive with cellaring. Enjoy!

"The 2019 Rosso di Montalcino lifts up with a pretty herbal and floral display, gaining richness with time in the glass, as wild strawberries and brown spice come forward with hints of white pepper and smoke. It boasts silky textures over a medium-bodied frame, with masses of ripe red and black berries contrasted by salty mineral. A gorgeous inner sweetness lingers, tapering off to inner violet tones with an underlying twang of tart citrus. There’s really quite a lot going on here for a Rosso which may become even more expressive with short-term cellaring."

"The 2019 Rosso di Montalcino is lifted with aromatics of ripe raspberry, rose petal, and licorice. There is ripe freshness on the palate, with crisp red cherry, sweet Mediterranean herbs, and orange zest. This is a delightful Rosso with a lot of energy that will be great early drinking from 2021-2026."

"Sour cherries, lemon zest, peppercorns and dried herbs on the nose. Medium-bodied with grainy tannins and bright acidity. Some pretty mushroom and savory notes. Bright and juicy."
Winemaker Notes:
"Elegant and refined with alluring redand black fruits, flowers and mocha in the nose and mouth, this Rosso di Montalcino is made from the younger Brunello vines. It will make a perfect accompaniment to pork dishes, especially with rosemary accents, grilled tuna, pasta pomodoro or bolognese, and/or with fine Italian cheeses."
