Rescued from obscurity, Bobal is Spain's hidden gem. This under-the-radar grape happens to be the 3rd most planted red wine in Spain. Planted only in one small corner of Spain, Bobal had been mostly unheard of. Over the last decade, it's been revived by a small group of producers and is now attracting a growing band of followers. Bobal has slowly become a darling amongst Spanish sommeliers and wine professionals. This unique and mystical grape has been named as a Spanish variety to watch out for. Bobal is loved for its fruity flavors, soft tannins and velvety finish. The grape produces beautiful, rounded red wines with plenty of raspberry and cherry flavor, but isn't too heavy. Bodega Mustiguillo is a relative new winery. Owner, Toni Sarrion, began a one man crusade to save the indigenous Bobal variety and coax it from obscurity and rusticity to the forefront of the wine world. Mustiguillo has been named one of Wine & Spirits Top 100 wineries and is credited with releasing "wines of depth, complexity and texture" by the New York Times. Mustiguillo Mestizaje is one of the best values on the market and perfect for wine lovers in search of something new. This is a great expression of the grape which is the next big thing in Spanish wine. It's the kind of wine in-the-know drinkers clamor for. The 2019 Mustiguillo Mestizaje Tinto is spectacular. It has notes of blackberry, black currant, violets, cedar and black pepper with mineral acidity. This Spanish red has a long, spicy finish with fine, grippy tannins. Enjoy!
Wine Advocate, 92 Points
"The blend of the 2019 Mestizaje, which varies from vintage to vintage, is 73% Bobal, 15% Garnacha and 12% Syrah. It has moderate 13.5% alcohol and a pH of 3.58 with 5.7 grams of acidity (tartaric). It fermented in a combination of French oak and stainless steel vats and matured in 225- and 500-liter oak barrels and oak vats for 10 months. It's a spectacular red, with finesse and length, good complexity and perfectly integrated oak, very serious, with chalky and polished tannins. 91,600 bottles produced. It was bottled in January 2021. Best after 2022."

"Quite exuberant with gamey, barnyard, herbal, black and red fruit aromatics, grippy tannins and a long, spicy finish. Lovely drinking. Blend : 73% Bobal, 15% Garnacha, 12% Syrah."
Winemaker Notes:
"Deep in color with an intriguing nose of black fruits, violets, cedar and black pepper. The fleshy dark fruit flavors of blackberry and black currant are lifted by brink mineral acidity (this is where those limestone soils come through) and fine tannins. Leaves you on a nice sweet and spicy finish, a perfect pair with anything cooked over fire & smoke."
