"This comes from a half-hectare located upslope from the Clos-St-Denis, where Lignier is the owner of one third of the appellation. The vines were planted in 1966 and 30% of the fruit was fermented as whole clusters. There is great purity to the ripe plummy fruit, with floral notes that shine through a bit of reduction. On the palate the wine is dense but very fresh, lively and long. Drinking Window 2024 - 2039."

"From a higher-altitude site located in a former quarry, Lignier's 2019 Morey-Saint-Denis 1er Cru Les Chaffots unwinds in the glass with aromas of earthy wild berries, cherries, licorice and warm spices. Medium to full-bodied, velvety and layered, it's lively and precise, with a more tightly wound, lower-pH profile than the Riotte. The 2019s, according to Laurent Lignier, possess "all the characteristics of great Pinot Noir," and that's an analysis with which I would concur. He has once again produced a fine vintage for both his domaine holdings and négociant sources—the latter, amounting to some 3.5 hectares of vines, now clearly distinguished in our reviews. As readers will know, winemaking is pretty classical at this address, with a short cold maceration, two to three weeks' maceration with one pigéage and one rémontage per day and maturation in barrels, some third of which are new—if possible, without racking—for fully 22 months in the domaine's cold cellars. Lignier began picking on September 16, and alcohol levels range between 13.5% and 14.7%, the latter extreme representing the exception rather than the rule. Tasting through the wines, the vast majority of which were in barrel and had not been racked, the most obvious analogy was with the domaine's 2015s at the same stage—but I look forward to revisiting them from bottle to confirm that impression."

"The 2019 Morey-Saint-Denis Les Chaffots 1er Cru shows just a very small reduction, but it manages to convey the lively brambly red berries mixed with cola and earthy aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with a supple entry, very fresh and well defined, silky in texture with an understated yet very sustained and elegant finish. Bon vin!"

"A much earthier nose offers up notes of poached plum, warm earth, dark currant and a whiff of the sauvage. The intense big-bodied flavors possess a surprisingly polished mouthfeel along with good detail on the robust, muscular and powerful finish that displays excellent length. As is typically the case, this is very serious and a wine that will require extended cellaring to shed its carapace of firm tannins. One to strongly consider. *Burghound Sweet Spot Outstanding!*"

"One third new wood is used for all the Morey 1ers crus. This one is high on the hillside and is currently showing a light graphite reduction. The oak is apparent here, here but that’s fine with the immense concentration of fruit, fresh red notes, with a strawberry overlay. Tasted: November 2020."
