The Marengo estate has one of the smallest cellars in Barolo, yet turns out some of the finest and purest wines in the region.  The family has been making wine in their tiny cellar since 1899 and is privileged to be among the many more famous names who own vineyards in the "Brunate" cru which is considered to be one of the grand crus of the Langhe.  Elio Altare once said that Marengo's vineyards were the "finest he had ever seen".  Marengo makes tiny quantities of modern-style Barolo from old vines.  The wines are known for being well-balanced, ample, intense, and perfectly rich.  They are especially famous for their Barolos.  Antonio Galloni, of Vinous, once remarked "Marco Marengo is one of Piedmont's emerging superstar producers.  Although the Marengo family has made wine here since 1899, it's as if someone turned on a switch a few years ago, when the wines - the Barolos in particular - went from excellent to outstanding, a level they have maintained ever since".  The 2017 M. Marengo Barolo Brunate shows why this is such a highly regarded site.  It's compelling and powerful with ripe strawberry, spice, leather and orange peel.  It's complex, structured and full bodied with firm, chewy tannins.  Enjoy!

James Suckling, 95 Points

"A red with lovely ripe strawberry, spice and some flowers and leather. Dried orange peel, too. Full-bodied with firm, chewy tannins that are slightly mouth-puckering. It’s structured and rather powerful. Needs time to soften. Give it three or four years to soften. Try after 2024."

Wine Advocate, 94 Points

"With fruit from La Morra, the 2017 Barolo Brunate presents a taut and tight bouquet of candied cherry, violets, orange peel and iron ore. The aromas are fluid and agile, yet they are also quite polished and focused. Indeed, this Brunate offers the greatest degree of complexity and sheer depth in this portfolio from the Marengo family of La Morra. Again, we see those extra tight tannins that are such a common feature of Barolo wines from the hot and dry 2017 vintage."

Vinous, 94 Points

"The 2017 Barolo Brunate shows why this is such a highly-regarded site. Powerful and deep, the 2017 has enough fruit and pedigree to keep the formidable tannins in check. Blue/purplish fruit, spice, leather, licorice and menthol gain volume as the 2017 opens in the glass. This brooding Barolo needs time in bottle, but it is pretty compelling, even in the early going."

Wine Spectator, 93 Points

"Woodsy, spice and floral notes frame the core of cherry and strawberry in this slim, detailed red, which is bright and pure, firming up as the finish lends a compact feel. Best from 2024 through 2040."

Winemaker Notes:

"Garnet red in color. Typical, fruity, black cherries, dried rose, spicy notes. On the palate, dry, warm, full-bodied, soft, clean, sweet and well integrated tannins, quite persistent."

Alcohol: 14.5%
