Producer: Louis M. Martini
Region: St. Helena, Napa Valley, California
Varietal: Cabernet Sauvignon
Year: 1975
The story of Louis Martini is a key chapter in Napa's winemaking history. Genovese immigrant Louis Martini established his first business in 1922, smack in the middle of Prohibition (in force in the U.S. from 1919 until 1933). He was therefore limited to making "sacramental and medicinal" wines at first. With the end of Prohibition, Martini became one the first winemakers in California to produce vintage-dated varietal table wines in quantity, and at reasonable prices. Sourced from prime vineyards in Napa and Sonoma, including Monte Rosso in the mountains above Sonoma Valley and La Loma in the cool Carneros district south of Napa, and made with care and expertise, Louis Martini wines typically age exceptionally well.
