"Barbeito has an impressive, though diminishing collection of old vintage Madeiras (as these wines gain greater popularity and acclaim). The Malvasia is the richest, sweetest variety of Madeira, often showing flavors of dried figs, dates, cocoa, spices and cola. Do not be fooled though, unlike other older, rich dessert wines (pedro ximenez, for example) these wines have incredible acidity and minerality as well. As with any vintage Madeira, particularly those made by master blender Ricardo Freitas, the acidity here is a defining feature and gives the wine - despite its richness and sweetness - remarkable complexity and staying power. At over 50 years old (with much of this time spent in a wood barrel), this wine is a true treat. You can have vintage Madeira open for many months, even years, without much noticeable degradation in quality. Also, please note that these wines love air, and will greatly reward decanting prior to service."
