"A long walk through the vineyards of St-Romain reminded me of a bottle sitting in a dusty corner of the cellar. It is from California actually, but the Ici/La Bas label is a three-way joint venture between Jim Clendenen of Au Bon Climat, tonnelier Jean François of François Frères in St-Romain and the latter’s inimitable US representative Mel Knox. Various wines from different parts of California and Oregon have been made under this label. This one is a 2007 Elke Vineyard Pinot from the Anderson Valley. Most 2007 red Burgundy needs drinking up and this too is reasonably mature in colour, though there is more depth of fruit apparent in the nose. There is a sweet scent of roses, but that is because I am tasting the wine outdoors and all the roses are in full bloom! The fruit on the palate is a vivid deep red, ripe but not excessively so, indeed with a filament of green maintaining a balance to suit the European palate. I think it is going to blossom further across dinner. Tasted Jul 2020."
