In 1998, Santiago Achaval, Manuel Ferrer, Diego Rosso, Marcelo Victoria, and the Italian superstar winemaker Roberto Cipresso came to Mendoza to start a new wine project and formed Achaval-Ferrer. They have one passion: to craft world-class, terroir-driven, red wines from Argentina. They now produce one of the finest Malbecs in the world from the Altamira vineyard. Achaval-Ferrer's original plan was to establish the most high-tech winery in the Southern Hemisphere, but all that changed when they discovered Altamira - a century-old, low-yielding, ungrafted Malbec vineyard. The winery quickly shifted their plans to center around what would become their crown jewel and with it they would produce wines sourced from single vineyards with these low-yielding, ungrafted vines. "Finca" wines are the crowning achievement of Achaval-Ferrer. They're small production, expressive Malbecs that truly channel Argentina's terroir. The Altamira Malbec is the most critically acclaimed Malbec from Mendoza. No other vineyard in Argentina has been praised as much and Achaval-Ferrer has now received more accolades than any other Argentine producer. The 2016 Achaval-Ferrer Finca Altamira Malbec is silky with fresh acidity and plush tannins. It has a very expressive finish and an alluring, spicy edge. This Malbec has notes of blackberry, cherries, plum, violet, cassis and a touch of leather. Enjoy!
James Suckling, 97 Points
"Superbly fragrant and floral with ethereal red flowers and red plums, as well as cherries and an alluring, spicy edge. The palate has a very composed, coolly refined and plush feel with succulent red plums, cherries and spicy, earthy notes cast on long, fine, lacy and very plush tannins. Drink now."
Vinous, 94+ Points
"Saturated medium ruby. Pungent if slightly reduced aromas of red and black fruits, salty minerality, spices and herbs. Suave, fine-grained and wonderfully detailed, with its savory flavors of black raspberry, mocha and spices showing terrific peppery lift. A distinctly mineral, saline Malbec with a serious whiplash of flavor on the smoothly tannic back end. If this wine is youthfully closed and in need of oxygen, it also shows more punch than the more liqueur-like 2015 version. Lay it down."
Wine Spectator, 93 Points
"Shows sinewy power behind the deep, rich flavors of dark fruit and spice, featuring plenty of grip. Seductive loamy notes emerge midpalate, offering a long finish that is powered by chocolate nib and slate accents."
Winemaker Notes:
"Dark medium ruby. Blackberry, black plum, violet, cassis and a touch of leather on the nose. Silky on the palate, fresh acidity and refined tannins. Marked layers of espresso with a long floral very expressive finish."
